Students threaten to paralyse Rokeya University
The agitating students of mass communication and journalism department at Rangpur Rokeya University have announced to shut down the administrative building from today if the acting proctor is not removed immediately. They made the announcement from a rally in front of the proctor office on Wednesday. They kept the office besieged for two hours until 2pm. Earlier in the day, they paraded the streets amid rain chanting slogans against the acting proctor, Mir Tamanna Siddika, for abusing power. On April 14, she handed over Dipu Roy, a student from the sixth batch of the mass communication and journalism department, to police around 10am accusing him of misbehaving with her. Hearing the news, Dipu’s father Anil Chandra died after a cardiac arrest in Nilphamari. Dipu was released after the news of his father’s death spread around 3pm. Students alleged that the proctor had been abusing her power and blamed many male students of sexually harassing her in the past few months. The proctor had ordered the members of the campus’ police outpost to break his legs and send him to court showing him arrested in the pending cases related to campus violence. Acting proctor Tamanna Siddika, an assistant professor of women and gender studies department, could not be reached over the phone on Wednesday.
