Kids Read launched with 10,000 students expected to take part
Dhaka South City Corporation Mayor Mohammad Sayeed Khokon officially launched the project, which was attended by 150 students, as well as officials of both organisations. British Council, with supported grants from Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Limited (HSBC), is the organiser behind Kids Read. Addressing the students, the mayor said, “You do not need to read all day. You can read when you wish to read. You can be relaxed and enjoy the reading experience. You can be the premier of the country in the future.” The DSCC mayor asked the students about the cleanliness of their school’s surroundings and requested them to keep their classrooms as neat and tidy as possible. To support the Ministry of Education’s work in English language and literacy development, Kids Read was implemented in Bangladesh in 2015 and, this year, the second edition of the project was launched successfully. Bangladesh is one of eight countries in Asia where the project was implemented. It is an initiative which also trains teachers from the selected schools to be more interactive and engaging with the students.
