The project is estimated to cost around Tk8 crore

The Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) is going to open a cremation ground at Mirpur, ward 9 in Dhaka.

The project is estimated to cost around Tk8 crore, DNCC Mayor Atiqul Islam said at a virtual meeting on Sunday.

He said ensuring access to cremation facilities for those who needed them was a step towards achieving communal harmony in Bangladesh.

"We have already started to call the Imams of the mosques to stop violence in the name of religion because we want to see a non-communal Bangladesh," said the DNCC mayor.

Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives (LGRD) Minister Md Tajul Islam called the meeting to discuss the recent communal violence across the country with elected representatives and local government officials.

The LGRD minister asked everyone in attendance to take necessary steps to stop all kinds of violence.

"If an accident like the one in Comilla happens somewhere again, then the representatives of that area will be responsible for it," he said.

"In a country, different people from different religions will live together. This is natural and we can't fight amongst ourselves, as Bangladesh has believed in non-communalism from its beginning," the minister added.

He said: "There are many religious books in Bangladesh, but the constitution remains the same. Bangladesh will be run by its constitution and according to the constitution, we cannot use religion as our weapon."

The minister also asked everyone to increase community engagement in urban and rural areas to tackle communal violence.

Mayor of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Barrister Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh was also present at the meeting. The mayor said that there was no unrest in Dhaka during the Durga Puja.
