No casualties were reported

At least eight people sustained burn injuries in a fire that broke out inside the eco cath lab of Mugda General Hospital in Dhaka on Thursday.

The hospital Intensive Care Unit (ICU) is located near the lab on the sixth floor.

Flames erupted following an explosion on the sixth floor ICU, Khandaker Toufiq, an aide to the hospital director, told the media.

Seven fire fighting units rushed to the hospital around 12:30pm and doused around 2:10pm, said Jibon Mia, a leader of the Fire Service and Civil Defense.

"The cause of fire and evaluation of loss could not be known immediately,” Jibon added.

Jahirul Haque, a lab technician of the eco cath lab, said the air-conditioner of the lab exploded while they were working inside it and the fire started.

Chief Coordinator of the Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery Dr Shamonto Lal Sen said that eight injured have been taken to their facility while three of the injured were referred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital as they sustained head injuries.

"The other five are admitted here. Two of them are in critical condition since one sustained 35% and another 25% burn injury," he added.

"We kept them under observation. We are hopeful of their recovery.".

A team of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) visited the spot. A probe body has been formed by the fire service.

There were no patients in that ICU when the fire broke out, Mugda Medical College Principal Dr Ahmadul Kabir told an online newspaper.

He added that the ICU was being used for Covid-19 patients but since cases have gone down, it was being prepared for regular patients.

All of the injured were hospital employees, who were cleaning the ICU, said Kabir.

According to him, a sixth employee was hurt during the resulting chaos.
