The gang targets expatriates to take advantage of their reluctance to file cases, police say

Detectives on Saturday arrested three suspected members of a mugging ring that operates at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka.

The suspects were identified as Md Masudul Haque Apel, Amir Hossain Hawlader, and Md Shamim. They were detained from the Mirbagh area of the capital by Dhaka Metropolitan Police Detective Branch North Division, DB Chief and Additional Commissioner of Police AKM Hafiz Akter said during a press conference at the DMP Media Centre.

Five passports, two national identity cards, two ATM cards, an iPad, a work permit, a card of the Bureau of Manpower Employment and Training (BMET), an office ID card, a knife, and Tk55,000 in cash were recovered from the suspects.

There have been more than 50 incidents of robbery and abduction targeting expatriates at the Dhaka airport, but only three cases have been filed. Detectives tracked down the suspects while investing two of the cases, according to the DB chief.

“Expatriates are often reluctant to file cases as they are only in Bangladesh for a short time. The robbers take advantage of this,” he added.

On September 7, Liton Sarker came to Bangladesh on a Turkish Airlines flight from Egypt. When he was waiting for a vehicle under the footbridge at the entrance to the Dhaka airport, a group of five or six miscreants robbed him at knifepoint, Additional Commissioner Hafiz Akter said.

The robbers took all his luggage, which included his passport, visa, plane ticket, a gold chain weighing 5.83g, two mobile phones, a smart card, clothing and Tk40,000 in cash. Subsequently, Sarkar filed a case with the Airport police station.

Another case was filed by Omar Sharif, who came to the country from the UK on October 5. He was abducted from the airport area and released outside of Dhaka, but the abductors took his passport and other belongings.

Investigation of the two cases led police to the three suspects, the DB chief said.

He added that the mugging ring targeted people who were waiting for vehicles, and in some cases drugged them by offering tea or other beverages.

Efforts are underway to arrest the other members of the gang, he further said.
