The body was found hanging from the ceiling fan but his friends are speculating murder
The body of a Dhaka University (DU) alumnus was recovered from a bachelors’ flat in Chankharpool, where he lived with two other roommates and a few other flatmates.
Masud Al Mahadi Opu, 27, hailing from Pirojpur’s Shohagdol village, was a student of the 2011-12 session at DU’s Mass Communication and Journalism department.
Quoting Opu's flatmates, police said it might have been a suicide.
Md Jasim Uddin Molla, deputy commissioner of Lalbagh Division under Dhaka Metropolitan Police, said the law enforcers suspected the incident to be murder, as claimed by Opu's friends.
The cause of death could be determined after autopsy, for which the body had been sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, Jasim added.
Opu talked to his two roommates at around 12pm on Monday and said he had a viva voce for a government job on Tuesday. The duo then left for their workplace.
Later, his other flatmates found his room locked from inside at around 2pm. As Opu was unresponsive they called the caretaker of the seven-storey building to break the lock, the deputy commissioner said.
"They broke the lock of the room and found Opu’s body hanging from the fan. Later, police recovered the body," said Jasim.
The police also recovered a note from Opu’s moneybag where he had made a list of everyone he owed money to, and the loan totals to about Tk45,000.
Opu's friend Mir Arshadul Haq urged a proper investigation into the incident. He also said that Opu was one of the toppers in his undergraduate class.
He had also qualified for the 41st BCS preliminary and was preparing for the next examination.
