There was no sign of attack on him, confirm police sources
An on-duty police constable was killed by a bullet from his own gun in Dhaka’s Ramna area on Friday.
He was shot on his chin at the main gate of Dhaka district police superintendent’s bungalow around 3:45pm.
The victim was identified as Mehedi Hasan, 26, son of Abdul Hanif from Anhela village in Ghatail upazila of Tangail.
Initially, it was suspected that he either accidentally pushed the trigger of his own gun or shot himself, said Sajjadur Rahman, Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) deputy commissioner of Ramna division.
“The on-duty doctors declared him dead around 5pm, after his body was sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital. An autopsy will be done shortly and the rest will be determined based on the doctor’s report,” he added.
DMCH police outpost In-Charge Md Bacchu Mia said the victim’s body was kept at the morgue.
Ramna police station Office-in-Charge (OC) Monirul Islam told Dhaka Tribune: “Usually only one guard performs duty at the main gate of the bungalow at a time. The other guards were taking rest during the incident. Mehedi was alone when the fire was shot around 3:45pm,” he said.
“There is no sign of attack on him,” the OC confirmed.
Superintendent of Police (SP) Maruf Hossain Sarder confirmed that the victim was on duty at the main gate of his residence in the afternoon.
“It seems that he committed suicide. It can be an accident too. CID’s crime detection unit collected evidence from the scene.” he added.
