A sixth-grader has committed suicide after being blackmailed by two youths in Dhaka’s Basabo who made an offensive video of her and posted it on social media.
Sobujbagh police arrested the accused – Shamim and Fahim – after the girl’s father filed a case under the Pornography Control Act and the Penal Code on Sunday night, according to Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Moradul Islam.
The deceased was a student of a local school in Basabo area, where she resided at her grandparents’ house. Her parents live in a slum in Dhalpur area. Her father has a rickshaw garage while the mother works as a cleaner of the city corporation. The victim was the eldest of two sisters.
According to the case, Shamim gave indecent proposals to the girl repeatedly and got rejected. Enraged by this, Shamim and Fahim made a fake video using some photos of the girl, and threatened to post it online if she did not pay them Tk20,000.
Father Md Abul said that his daughter knew nothing about the video, which had been posted on the internet two days ago.
The girl’s uncle Jony said that after learning about the footage, her family quizzed her about it on Sunday afternoon. Following the confrontation, the 14-year-old girl locked the door of a room and hanged herself from the ceiling fan around 8pm.
She was found in an unconscious state, and rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where the duty doctors declared her dead around 9:30pm.
