A section of Dhaka University students on Wednesday demanded ensuring residential facilities before taking exams, as DU decided to hold final-year exams for honours and masters programs from December 26 amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Some students under the banner of Dhaka University general students came up with the six points demand in a human chain held at the base of Raju Memorial Sculpture at the university.

Their six points demand include reopening residential dormitories (halls) with proper management, taking review classes of every course to overcome losses for those who couldn't join online classes and ensuring transportation facilities for non residential students.

The students said not to take two semester final exams on the same day and give students enough time for preparation.

Mehedi Hasan, a final year student of Islamic Studies department said: “Where are we going to stay in Dhaka if the halls remain shut? We come from poor and middle income families and cannot afford a suitable place to stay in the city during exam time.”

"Even for the students whose relatives stay in Dhaka it is difficult to manage accommodation with them in this situation. Moreover, the risk of a second Covid-19 wave is looming. Also we just can't afford to pay the security deposit that most landlords insist on," he said.

Atik Morshed, another student from the International Business department termed the university's decision to take exams without ensuring residential facilities as “illogical”.

He said: "It’s a matter of shame that our vice chancellor says he doesn't know where students will stay."

It’s the university's responsibility to ensure it's students' residential facilities.

The human chain threatened to go for tougher movement if the authority failed to manage accommodation facilities.

Moreover, some leaders, activists of Bangladesh Sadharan Chhatra Odhikar Parishad (Bangladesh General Students’ Rights Protection Council) sat at the base of Raju memorial sculpture with four points demand including reopening dorms maintaining social distancing, ensuring security for examinees and setting up separate coronavirus unit at Dhaka University Medical Centre for university students.

Bin Yamin Molla, one of the key leaders of the organization also demanded ensuring digital devices and data packs for students who are facing trouble to join online classes and academic activities.

Moreover, Jatiyotabadi Chhatra Dal also gave a memorandum to the University Vice Chancellor Prof Akhtaruzzaman demanding the same.
