Former Gazipur City Corporation (GCC) Mayor MA Mannan has been sentenced to one-year imprisonment by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) in a case filed by the commission for embezzling Tk50 lakh in fake vouchers.
At the same time, he was fined Tk50 lakh, in default he has to serve three more months in jail, said ACC lawyer Mahmud Hossain Jahangir on Wednesday.
He said Judge Syed Kamal Hossain of the Dhaka Divisional Special Judge’s Court passed the verdict in presence of MA Mannan.
According to the allegations in the case, while MA Mannan was the mayor of Gazipur City Corporation (August 18, 2013, to February 2, 2015), he allegedly fraudulently showed 999 vouchers of grants and expenses and also embezzled Tk49,01,848 of the city’s relief and poor fund.
Later, ACC Deputy Assistant Director Shamsul Alam filed a case against Mannan and his accomplice Golam Kibria with Joydebpur police station in Gazipur on June 23, 2016.
