The accused was held from the capital's Banasree area for spreading rumours over the recent disappearance of a JnU student
The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has arrested a man from Dhaka on charges of circulating rumours against the agency over the recent disappearance of a Jagannath University (JnU) student.
CID's cyber monitoring team arrested Niranjan Baral, 50, a resident of Jhalakathi, on Monday, from the capital's Banasree area and filed a case under the Digital Security Act (DSA) with Paltan police station against him, said a press release issued in this regard.
CID on Saturday came across a Facebook post which claimed that the missing Jagannath University student Tithi Sarker was rescued from CID’s Malibagh office with her hands tied up.
CID termed the news as fake and identified Niranjan behind spreading the rumour.
Facebook accounts and other devices of the accused were seized during the arrest, CID added.
CID said that Niranjan’s Facebook timeline showed various other controversial religious and political posts.
Tithi Sarker, a third-year student of the university’s zoology department, had been missing since October 25 after she went out to visit the Pallabi police station and then a Durga Puja mandap in the capital, claimed her family members.
Tithi was suspended by the university authorities for allegedly making derogatory remarks about Islam and Prophet Muhammad on Facebook.
