Her government firmly believes in the freedom of press, says Sheikh Hasina
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Sunday called upon the journalists to not write any report that could mislead the nation towards wrong direction as journalism without principle could bring no welfare for any country.
“Don’t write any report that can misguide the people towards wrong direction. I request you all to pay heed to this matter,” she said while virtually inaugurating the Dhaka Reporters’ Unity (DRU) program marking its silver jubilee from her official residence Ganabhaban.
The prime minister at the same time appreciated the journalists for their objective reports that guided the government to take prompt measures against any sorts of injustice.
“Reports [in the media] help us a lot. By reading the reports in the newspapers, we stand by the helpless people and take tougher action against the wrongdoers,” she said, urging the journalists to work with responsibility, patriotism, and for the welfare of the people.
Quoting Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, she said: “Politics without principle can’t give anything to the country and the nation. Like that, journalism without principle can’t bring any welfare for the country, rather it affects the society in many cases.”
Noting that her government firmly believes in the freedom of press and has done whatever necessary to this respect, she requested the journalists to make constructive criticism that will help the government’s endeavour to build the country as a developed and prosperous one free from hunger and poverty envisioned by the Father of the Nation.
The DRU organized the function from a city hotel; its incumbent president and general secretary, former president and general secretaries, and founding members, among others, were present at the program.
The prime minister’s Press Secretary Ihsanul Karim moderated the function from Ganabhaban.
