'As an MP he [Nixon] violated the code of conduct during the Charbhadrasan Upazila Parishad by-polls'
The Election Commission (EC) has decided to take action against Faridpur 4 MP Mujibur Rahman Nixon Chowdhury for violating the Upazila Parishad (Election Code of Conduct) Rule 2016.
“Action will be taken against MP Nixon if he is found involved in abusing and allegedly threatening the deputy commissioner (DC) of Faridpur district over the arrest of his supporters during the Charbhadrasan Upazila Parishad by-polls,” said Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) KM Nurul Huda at the Nirbachan Bhaban on Tuesday.
On Monday, the Cabinet Division sent out letters to the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), the Parliament Secretariat, the Election Commission Secretariat and other authorities concerned to take legal steps against lawmaker Nixon.
Replying to a media question the Election Commission chief said: "We, the commissioners, have come to a decision over the matter after receiving a complaint in this regard and it will be announced soon."
"As an MP he [Nixon] violated the code of conduct during the Charbhadrasan Upazila Parishad by-polls. Action will be taken against him and the law will be applied appropriately."
MP Nixon will not get any special treatment because he is a lawmaker, he added.
Meanwhile, Election Commissioner Md Rafiqul Islam said: “We are ready to do whatever that is in the law regarding the issue."
