All the victims suffer 50% to 90% burns in their bodies

Update : 08 Sep 2020, 04:04 PM

Nine people, who sustained critical burn injuries in a mosque blast in Narayanganj, are undergoing treatment at the intensive care unit (ICU) of Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery in Dhaka.

"All of them are in critical condition as their windpipes have been burnt," Dr Partha Shankar Pal, resident physician of the institute, told the reporters on Tuesday.

He said all the victims suffered 50% to 90% burns in their bodies.

"We are continuing our effort to save their lives."

Dozens of people were injured in an explosion from an air conditioner at Baitus Salat Jame Mosque in Fatullah, Narayanganj on Friday night during Isha prayers.

Of the injured, 37 were brought to the institute and 27 of them died till Monday.

One patient was discharged from the hospital on the same day.

Four separate probe committees – by Narayanganj district administration, Fire Service, Titas Gas Transmission and Distribution Company Ltd, and Dhaka Power Distribution Company (DPDC) -- have been formed to investigate the incident.

Meanwhile, the widespread speculation that the explosion was caused by gas leaking from an underground pipeline has been found to be true.

Investigators from the Titas Gas Transmission and Distribution Company Limited found leakages on the gas pipeline in the ground that passed beneath the mosque.
