'I believe this is an ideal example of public-private initiative as the arrangement allows the tower company to sell its tower space to mobile phone operators using DNCC’s unused spaces'
The Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) has launched the country’s first ever multipurpose smart lamp pole in Banani. The project is in collaboration with edotco Bangladesh, an integrated telecommunications infrastructure services company.
This is part of the new Smart City solutions, which is the result of a recently signed Public Private Partnership (PPP). The aim of this project is to develop Smart City features on a pilot basis.
DNCC Mayor Md Atiqul Islam inaugurated the initiative. Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) Chairman Jahurul Haque, renowned academic Prof Muhammed Zafar Iqbal, and edotco Bangladesh Managing Director Ricky Steyn joined the program through video conference.
“I am committed to converting Dhaka into a smart city. We are excited to be able to launch smart city solutions like this for the first time, and giving our people a new and improved platform for social and civil activities,” said Atiqul.
“If this pilot initiative succeeds, we intend to install similar smart poles at around 200-250 potential locations all over DNCC from now till 2021.
“I believe this is an ideal example of public-private initiative as the arrangement allows the tower company to sell its tower space to mobile phone operators using DNCC’s unused spaces,” the DNCC mayor said.
“In return, the residents will get services like free WiFi, light, air quality report, awareness messages, smart bins, etc.”
“This will provide the people of this city with not only excellent connectivity, but an overall improved quality of life,” Atiqul added.
He further said: “The integrated solution will be able to provide security surveillance (optional), waste management system through smart bins, real time air quality monitoring, as well as serve as a digital banner for community messages.”
edotco Bangladesh Managing Director Ricky Steyn said: “We are proud to be able to partner with the DNCC in executing its vision to provide uninterrupted connectivity for all.”
“edotco has played a key role in developing the telecommunications infrastructure in the country and we intend to continue partnering the nation towards achieving its digital Bangladesh vision.”
“While we focus on ensuring continuous, stable, and fast connectivity for all citizens, we are also committed to enabling the nation’s 5G readiness by introducing next generation solutions such as smart city solutions like these.”
