After months on the run, police have finally arrested Rakib Uddin Ahmed on Wednesday from sadar police station area in Brahmanbaria for killing his wife and children.

He was found in Brahmanbaria in disguise of a beggar, police said. Detective Branch's Deputy Commissioner (DC) (North), Mashiur Rahman said he had been moving around the country pretending to be a beggar in Dhaka, Chittagong, Noakhali and Brahmanbaria.

Rakib, 46 also known as Liton on February 12 killed Munni, 38, her son Farhan Uddin Bhuiyan, 12, and daughter Laiba, 3 and disappeared. It was later discovered that he borrowed more than Tk1 crore and was unable to pay it back.

Quoting Rakib, Mashiur Rahman said: “He has had a habit of gambling. And he borrowed around Tk1.15 crore on interest at various times from different people, including his colleagues.” He was a junior assistant manager at Bangladesh Telecommunications Company Limited (BTCL).

“He wasted all the money by gambling online. Meanwhile, his creditors continued to press him for a return of their money. He had altercations with his family many times about the matter

“Rakib felt helpless and he decided to kill his wife and children and tried to commit suicide in a bid to relieve everyone from their suffering,” he said.

“During the primary interrogation Rakib has admitted to killing his wife and children on February 12. Later, he attempted to commit suicide,” said DC Mashiur added.

Police found their decomposing bodies on February 14 on the 3rd floor of a 5-storey building near KC School of Prembagan where they also found a note from Rakib that said, “I have killed the children. My body will be found on the rail line.”
