Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s killer Capt (dismissed) Abdul Majed has been arrested.
He was arrested from Dhaka’s Mirpur Cantonment area by Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime(CTTC) in the early hours of Tuesday.
DMP Deputy Commissioner (Media) Md Masudur Rahman confirmed the matter on Tuesday.
Later, Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate AM Zulfiker Hayat ordered to send him to jail after he was produced before his court.
The Supreme Court on November 19, 2009, upheld a High Court verdict, confirming capital punishment of 12 killers for killing Bangabandhu and most of his family members in a coup d’état on August 15, 1975.
Five killers still remain fugitive -- Col (dismissed) Khandaker Abdur Rashid, Lt Col (relieved) Shariful Haque Dalim, Maj (retd) Noor Chowdhury, Maj (retd) Rashed Chowdhury, and Risaldar Moslehuddin Khan.
To locate and bring them back, a taskforce comprising of ministers and high officials of the foreign, law, and home ministries was formed in 2010.
Rashed was traced in the US and Noor in Canada.
Among 12 convicted, five were executed on January 27, 2010. They were Syed Farooq Rahman, Sultan Shahriar Rashid Khan, Bazlul Huda, AKM Mohiuddin Ahmed, and Mohiuddin Ahmed.
Meanwhile, another killer, Aziz Pasha, died in Zimbabwe in 2001.
Earlier, Bangladesh government had made global appeals in bilateral, regional, and international forums to track down the culprits.
Two law firms from America and Canada were also appointed to bring the killers back to the country.
Majed is from Batamara village at Borhanuddin upazila, Bhola, a southern district of Bangladesh.
His properties in his village have already been confiscated by the district administration.
‘Majed cannot appeal against his death sentence as he was absconding’
Supreme Court Bar Association President Advocate AM Aminuddin while speaking to Dhaka Tribune said: “According to the law Majed is a convict and cannot appeal against his death sentence because he was absconding for a long time, after the verdict was given.”
According to Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPc) and others related laws, Mazed failed to appeal against his sentence given by the trial court and review petition against the verdict given by the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court.
People of Borhanuddin brimming with joy
While speaking to Dhaka Tribune, upazila freedom fighter commander Mohammad Ahmed Ullah said: “First I express my gratitude that the killer has been finally caught. Now the sentence should be executed as soon as possible.”
He said: “The government has identified his properties at Borhanuddin. Though some have been confiscated, it is not enough. We want all of his property to be confiscated.”
A public representative of Borhanuddin and Doulatkhan upazila, Ali Azam Mukul told the Dhaka Tribune: “We are very happy. People are expressing their satisfaction on social media as they cannot come out of their homes due to coronavirus.”
“We wanted that Bangabandhu’s killers would be caught in Mujib Borsho, and it has been served to some extent,” he said.
