She warns of strict action against those involved in misappropriation of food aid to the poor
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, apprehending a global economic crisis due to the coronavirus pandemic, has urged all concerned to start planning from now on by giving the highest priority to food production.
The prime minister called upon the district commissioners, the administration, health officials and elected public representatives of Dhaka city corporations to carry out their responsibilities through a video conference from Ganabhaban in Dhaka on Tuesday morning.
Placing priority on agricultural production and ensuring food security, Sheikh Hasina said, “If needed we can help other countries in times of crisis after meeting our demand. Do not leave a single inch of cultivable land fallow and wetland idle,” she said.
The premier directed the administration to ensure food support to poor and marginalized groups, including tea stall owners and the third gender community.
Saying that the country had enough food in reserve, the prime minister warned of strict action if anyone took advantage of these bad times by indulging in corruption in the distribution of food aid to the poor.
“At present we are going through hard times due to the outbreak of Covid-19. The whole world is now stagnant and economic activities have stopped. A vast global economic crisis may surface very soon. Therefore, we have to start planning from now, we should take measures in advance, to tackle the crisis ahead,” the prime minister said.
