The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in Comilla took on the  investigation of the case in April of 2016

“Everyone forgot my daughter, but how will I forget her, being a mother,” said Anwara Begum as four years have passed since the murder of her daughter, yet the killers could not be identified, nor has the investigation of the incident made any progress.

According to the victim’s family, Comilla Victoria College student Sohagi Jahan Tonu left home for tutoring at a house inside Comilla Cantonment on March 20 of 2016. She was later found dead behind a bush in the cantonment, not very far from home.

The next day, Tonu’s father Yaar Hossain filed a murder case against unknown assailants at Kotwali Model police station.

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in Comilla took on the  investigation of the case in April of 2016. The reports of autopsy, conducted twice by the forensic department of Comilla Medical College Hospital, were not helpful. The last hope for Tonu’s family to get justice is through the DNA samples collected from her clothes.

In May of 2017, CID informed the media of finding semen of three men, who reportedly raped her before murder. However, the progress in testing the samples was not disclosed. Three people suspected by Tonu’s mother were interrogated in Dhaka in October 2017, which is the most recent update CID could provide about the case.

Grieving, Tonu’s mother said: “The house is filled with my daughter’s memories. I see her wherever I look. I have stored her clothes. I cannot stop my tears when I take those out to get her smell.

“CID has not been responding to us for two years now. Tonu’s father and I became very sick. We couldn’t run around from office to office anymore. I want justice for my daughter’s murder before I die.

“It would have been comforting if I could meet the prime minister to ask for justice for my daughter’s killing,” she adds in anguish.

CID Additional Superintendent of Police Jalal Uddin Ahmed, also the case investigating officer, said: “We are still working on the matter. DNA test and matching requires time. We can move forward when we get the DNA report.”
