The duo fought over payment of their liquor bill, the Detective Branch says
Detectives have arrested a man for allegedly killing another man in a drunken brawl in front of a Dhaka hotel last week.
The incident took place in front of Hotel Sweet Dream in Banani, in the early hours of March 11, the Detective Branch of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) said.
The deceased, Md Shejad Khan Hasan, 45, was from Bhagalpur village in Kishoreganj. He was a businessman and owned an export-import company named BK International, his family told Dhaka Tribune. He also supplied equipment to different government offices, they added.
The accused, Babu Hawlader, 37, who is a master roll employee at a sub-registry office, was arrested in North Badda on Sunday night, the Detective Branch said.
The two had tussled over the payment of their liquor bill for the night, they further added.
Speaking to Dhaka Tribune, Golam Saklayen, additional deputy commissioner (ADC) of the Detective Branch in DMP North Division, said Shejad and Babu, who became friends through drinking, got drunk together at the hotel, first at the bar, then later in a room, and racked up a Tk8,000 bill.
When it came to payment, Babu asked Shejad to split the bill, and the two started fighting over it.
They kept arguing and fighting each other on and off about the bill payment, till they got down to the ground floor, where the hotel staff separated them.
After they left the hotel at around 2am on March 11, they started fighting again. At one point, Shejad collapsed on the road, and Babu fled the scene. Later, pedestrians took an unconscious Shejad to Uttara Crescent Hospital by a CNG-run autorickshaw, where the doctor on duty pronounced him dead.
ADC Saklayen said during investigation, the detectives contacted the hotel authorities, collected CCTV footage from the area, and asked people around.
“After analyzing the information we collected, we identified and arrested Babu,” he added.
During initial interrogation, Babu accepted responsibility for the killing and narrated the whole incident, the ADC told Dhaka Tribune.
“We have asked the court to place Babu on remand for further interrogation,” he added.
Shejad’s autopsy was conducted at Dhaka Medical College before the body was handed over to police.
