The Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has arrested two people for their alleged involvement in securing bail for a murder accused from the High Court by forgery.

Md Khalil Uddin, 22, and Belal Hossain, 24, were arrested in Dhaka's Segun Bagicha and Ramna areas respectively, DMP Senior Assistant Commissioner Nazmul Haque said on Thursday.

Both men worked as assistants at the chambers of two lawyers, he said.

Belal was apprehended on Wednesday following a confessional statement made by Khalil before a Dhaka court in this regard, he said.

"Khalil was arrested on February 6 during our investigation," Nazmul said.

The detectives were conducting drives to arrest other individuals, including the ringleader of the fraud syndicate, the police official said.

However, the murder accused, Jamil Hasan, a resident of Thakurgaon, has been on the run since he obtained bail.

Nazmul said there was a contract among Khalil, Belal and Jamil to help Jamil get bail from the High Court in the murder case filed with a Thakurgaon police station.

Jamil gave Tk35,000 to Khalil and Tk50,000 to Belal in addition to the lawyer's fees.

Subsequently, a bench of the High Court granted bail to Jamil on May 7, 2019.

It was later revealed that the accused had obtained bail by forgery when the bail papers were sent to the trial court in Thakurgaon.

On February 3 this year, Zakir Hossain Patwari, assistant registrar of the High Court Division, filed a case in this connection with Shahbagh police station.

However, AC Nazmul said, during primary interrogation, Belal confessed that the gang had managed to obtain bail for other accused in five to seven cases (all from Thakurgaon) from the High Court by forging the papers of the lower courts.

He said the police had already conducted raids in Thakurgaon to detain other associates of the syndicate, but could not catch anyone.

"If any lawyer is involved in this syndicate, he/she will also be brought to book," he added.
