The incident took place around 5pm on Tuesday
A four-year-old girl has been reportedly strangled to death by her mother at Dhaka’s Motijheel area.
The incident took place around 5pm on Monday.
The child, identified as Sayeda Monisha Mabrur, was taken to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital in critical condition where on-duty doctors declared her dead at around 6pm.
The victim’s father Syed Shafiqur Rahman told Dhaka Tribune that the child’s mother Sayeda Ishrat Jahan, a senior officer at Pubali Bank, had locked Monisha with her in a room of their house at Kabi Jashim Uddin Road of Motijheel.
“When Ishrat opened the door after I knocked on the door several times, I found Monisha lying in an unconscious state,” he added.
While confirming the incident, Motijheel police station Sub-Inspector Mizanur Rahman said: “We have found marks of fingers on the child’s throat. However, only after the autopsy report it can be confirmed whether the child was strangled to death.”
“The mother reportedly assaulted the child inside the locked room as Monisha refused to eat her food. We suspect that the child might have died from the physical assault,” Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) (Motijheel zone) Senior Assistant Commissioner Jahidul Islam Shohag told Dhaka Tribune.
He also said the mother is now in police custody for questioning.
