Members of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) recovered Tk58.41lakh from the possession of Shamima Nur Papia, expelled general secretary of Jubo Mohila League’s Narsingdi District unit.

In separate raids on Sunday, the elite force also recovered one foreign-made pistol, two magazines, 20 bullets, five bottles of foreign liquor, five passports, three cheque books, some foreign currencies and 10 bank cards from Papia’s residences.

RAB officials raided two flats and her rented presidential suite at a five-star hotel in Dhaka and seized the items belonging to Papia and her husband Mofizur Rahman.

Speaking at a press conference at RAB Media Centre in Karwan Bazar, RAB-1 Commanding Officer Shafiullah Bulbul said law enforcers have found huge discrepancies between the couple’s income and expenditure records.

“They own two flats in Indira Road in Dhaka, two flats and two plots in Narshingdi, investment of Tk1 crore at showroom ‘Car Exchange’ near FDC in Tejgaon, and about Tk40 lakh investment in KMC Car Wash and Auto Solution at Narshingdi,” said the RAB official.

Investigators also found Papia and her husband earned illegal wealth of Tk11lakh by luring people with job appointments as inspector at Bangladesh Police and in Bangladesh Railway, Tk35 lakh by promising people with gas connections for factories, Tk29 lakh promising of getting a connection at CNG refuelling station, among others.

They also earned huge sums via extortion, drugs and arms dealing in Dhaka and Narshingdi, RAB said.

On Saturday morning, RAB detained four members of a gang of currency counterfeiters and seized fake currencies of various countries from their possession at Dhaka airport. The detained included the couple and two of their associates.

RAB recovered seven passports, around Tk2.12 lakh in cash, Tk25,600 in fake currency, a huge amount of fake currencies of different countries from their possession during the arrest.

Elite force members said the couple spent Tk81.42lakh as bills at the Hotel Westin between October 12, 2019 and February 13, 2020. They also spent Tk2.5 lakh each night as they hired the hotels bar privately.

RAB-1 Commanding Officer Shafiullah Bulbul said in addition to extortion, arms and drugs business, the couple was also involved in luring women into prostitution with promise of jobs.

Meanwhile, Jubo Mohila League, an affiliated body of the ruling Awami League, suspended Papia from her post.

Jubo Mohila League’s General Secretary Apu Ukil told the Dhaka Tribune that she was suspended because of violating Section 22 of the organization’s constitution.

“We found out about her involvement with unlawful activity; that’s why she has been suspended,” Apu Ukil added.
