Police have detained two Dhaka University (DU) students for allegedly beating a truck driver and extorting money from him.
The detained are Jobayer Ahmed Shanto (20), a 3rd year student (2017-18 session) of the International Relations department and Md Al Amin (21) of the Criminology department of the same session.
Both are residential students of Ziaur Rahman hall and were sent to Court.
Shahbag police caught the two students when they were demanding money after beating Md. Kaiser, driver of a sand laden truck, around 4:30 am at the High Court crossing in Dhaka on Saturday.
Shahbagh police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Abul Hasan confirmed the matter to Dhaka Tribune.
He said a sand truck was parked in front of the High Court after it's tyre burst. The accused students then approached its driver and demanded money from him.
The OC quoting the driver, said finding no ready cash with the driver, they forced him to transfer money through a Rocket (Dutch Bangla) account. Accordingly, Kaiser transferred Tk1950 from his Rocket account, but not being satisfied with that, the two students asked him for more money.
In the meantime, Sohel Rana, supervisor of the truck approached a nearby policeman and informed him of the matter. “We later arrested them with the help of the university's proctoral team. They were produced in court on Saturday morning,” said OC Abul Hasan.
Sohel Rana, on behalf of the truck authorities, lodged a case with Shahbag police station regarding the incident.
