Sramik Dal was holding a program demanding Khaleda Zia’s release
BNP Standing Committee member Nazrul Islam Khan has said the party Chairperson Khaleda Zia will get bail this time if the judiciary functions independently.
"If she is deprived of getting bail, her release will be ensured by democratic process," he said on Thursday.
The BNP senior leader gave his reaction after the police barred a program of Jatiyatabadi Sramik Dal, an associate body of BNP, in front of National Press Club in Dhaka, citing security reasons following the arrival of the prime minister in the area.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was attending a program at the Osmani Memorial Auditorium in the morning for handing over the Ekushey Padak 2020 to 20 eminent persons and an organization.
However, Nazrul Islam said it is an inhuman offence to push the BNP chairperson to death slowly by keeping her in jail.
"Not only has the government, but the state also has to take the responsibility for committing such an offence," he added.
BNP Joint Secretary General Advocate Mujibur Rahman Sarwar and Habibun Nabi Khan Sohel were also present, among others, at the protest program, organized to press home their demand for the party chairperson's release from imprisonment.
Shahbagh police station Inspector (patrol) Abul Bashar told Dhaka Tribune that no programs were allowed on the streets as the prime minister was scheduled to pass through the area.
On Wednesday, the High Court fixed February 23 for hearing the petition filed by the BNP chairperson seeking bail in the Zia Charitable Trust corruption case.
She filed the bail petition afresh on Tuesday citing her illness.
On December 12, 2019, the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court turned down the bail petition of Khaleda Zia in the graft case.
A Dhaka special court jailed the BNP chief and three others for seven years in the corruption case on October 29, 2018.
Khaleda has been in jail since she was convicted in the Zia Orphanage Trust corruption case on February 8, 2018.
The BNP chief has been receiving treatment at the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) since April 1, 2019.
