During primary interrogation, Jonathan revealed that another colleague named Mamun handed him the gold bars from the flight
Airport Armed Police Battalion (APBn) has detained a man with 32 gold bars, weighing around 4 kilograms, from Dhaka’s Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport.
The arrested, Jonathan Mukti Barikder, 34, has been working as a cleaner at Biman Bangladesh Airlines since 2014.
He was arrested from a Concourse Hall of Dhaka airport yesterday at around 9:20 am. A case was also filed with the Airport police station in this regard on the same day.
Confirming the matter to Dhaka Tribune, APBn Additional Superintendent of Police (SP) (operations and media) Alamgir Hossain, said that the Biman employee made a deal with gold smugglers to carry and deliver 32 gold bars, weighing around 4 kilograms, for Tk20,000.
However, this was not Jonathan's first time smuggling gold as he had helped smugglers twice before, said Alamgir, adding, "In his latest attempt, as per the deal, Jonathan was supposed to get paid if the 32 gold bars were carried from a boarding bridge of the airport to the cleaners’ room, a distance of 200 yards. The market value of the seized gold is estimated to be Tk18,500,000."
"As per Jonathan's agreement with the smugglers, he collected the gold bars from a toilet of a flight that landed in Dhaka yesterday morning and hid those inside his shoes.
"But before he could hide the gold bars at the cleaners’ room and hand them over, we were able to catch him red-handed," Alamgir added.
He said: "An Emirates Airlines flight arrived in Dhaka from Dubai at 7:55 am. The plane was docking in the board-in bridge number 7 to offload aircraft crew and passengers. Then, Jonathan went in to clean the aircraft and came out after doing his work.
"However, Jonathan got locked in a heated debate with APBn members when they wanted to body-search him. Later, he was brought to the APBn office and the 32 gold bars were recovered from inside his shoes."
During primary interrogation, Jonathan revealed that one of his colleagues named Mamun handed him the gold bars from the flight. Later, he went into the plane’s toilet and hid the bars inside his shoes.
Alamgir also said that Jonathan was supposed to hand over the gold bars to his duty in-charge Atique, adding, Mamun and Atique, who fled the scene before APBn could apprehend them, have also been accused in the case filed over the gold smuggling incident.
