DU authorities also relieved a teacher from administrative and academic activities following allegations of forgery in his PhD thesis

Dhaka University (DU) has expelled 63 students for their involvement in digital fraud and admission through illegal means, and four students for keeping illegal arms and drug abuse.

The decision was taken at a meeting of the university syndicate, headed by its Vice Chancellor Professor Dr Akhtaruzzaman, said a press release on Tuesday.

Apart from that, the syndicate also suspended nine students for their involvement in digital fraud and admission through illegal means, and 13 students on allegations of mugging inside the campus.

The university authorities also decided to give the 22 students a seven-day notice period to defend themselves.

The meeting also decided to award punishment of various terms to 30 students for adopting unfair means during different course examinations.

Meanwhile, the DU authorities relieved assistant Proctor Lutful Kabir from administrative and academic activities following allegations of forgery in his PhD thesis.

A three-member probe body, headed by Pro Vice-Chancellor (Education) Prof Nasreen Ahmad, has also been formed in this regard.

“The probe team has also been asked to submit its report within the next eight working weeks,” confirmed DU syndicate member and associate professor Mohammad Humayun Kabir.

Earlier on January 14, DU disciplinary board recommended the expulsion of 67 students on different charges, including admission test fraud and drug abuse.

"Allegations of question leakage were brought against 87 students. Of them, expulsion was recommended for 63 since they took recourse to illegal means to get admitted to the university," DU Proctor Professor Golam Rabbani told Dhaka Tribune following the disciplinary board recommendation.

The students were enrolled in the university through fraudulent means in the academic sessions from 2012-13 to 2017-18.

Earlier on August 6, 2019, the DU authorities suspended 69 students for cheating at admission tests.

They faced the decision for violation of the Public Act, Money Laundering Act, and other laws of the country, Rabbani said.

Four residential students of Haji Muhammad Mohsin Hall were recommended for expulsion for drug abuse and arms possession, added Rabbani.

According to Dhaka University laws, no expelled student has a chance to challenge the decision of expulsion, but suspended students can appeal against their suspension.
