Students of Dhaka University (DU) demonstrated on the campus yesterday, protesting torture of four students allegedly by Bangladesh Chhatra League men inside the Shaheed Sergeant Zahurul Haque hall two days ago.

Santrash Birodhi Chhatra Oikya, an alliance of 12 student organizations, held a protest rally at the TSC intersection around 2pm, demanding immediate punishment of the torturers, reports UNB.

Addressing the rally, Dhaka University Central Student Union (Ducsu) Vice President Nurul Haque Nur said Chhatra League has established a reign of terror on university campuses across the country.

He urged Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, also the president of Awami League, to control the activities of the leaders and activists of her party’s youth wing.

Demanding resignation of the DU proctor, Nur said the university authorities failed to protect the general students.

Around 60 students also brought out a procession from the Faculty of Business Studies and paraded the main points of the campus.

Some Chhatra League men allegedly beat four students inside Zahurul Haque Hall on Tuesday night, over their suspected involvement in the politics of Islami Chhatra Shibir, the student wing of Jamaat-e-Islami.

Mukim Chowdhury, one of the victims and a second-year student of Tourism and Hospitality Management Department, has been observing a sit-in protest under the Anti-Terrorism Raju Memorial Sculpture since Wednesday.

“I have no link with Chhatra Shibir. The Chhatra League men intentionally tortured us. They have no right to torture any student of the university,” Mukim said.

“I want expulsion of those who assaulted us. I’ll continue my protest until my demands are met,” he announced.
