3 electrocuted in Dhaka

They were constructing pillars at a BIWTA construction site

Three workers have been electrocuted to death while constructing pillars on the Buriganga river bank.

The incident took place beside the Sikder Medical College and Hospital on Wednesday afternoon.

Two others were also injured at the time.

The deceased are Monju Mia, 35, from Barguna and two brothers Jharu Sheikh, 55, and Saiful Sheikh, 45, from Sirajganj.

Hazaribagh police station Sub-Inspector (SI) Mosharraf Hossain confirmed the matter.

He said that there were no safety measures taken for the workers at the site. The bodies were sent to Mitford morgue for autopsy, he added.

The injured Chan Badsha 45, and Abdul Jalil, 55, are undergoing treatment at Shikder Medical and are out of danger, duty doctors at the hospital said.

The three died on the spot of a Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) construction site when an electric cable fell over the pillar they were constructing, a construction worker Md Shohag said.

BIWTA Deputy Director Arif Hasnat, while speaking to Dhaka Tribune said: “A construction firm named Standard Engineering was in charge of the piling of rods and pillars over there.”

“The matter will be investigated, whether there was any fault of the company regarding the incident,” he said.
