The first BIMSTEC International Conference on film, media, and journalism got underway at the University of Dhaka (DU) yesterday, marking the birth centenary of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
The three day long program, ‘Film, Media and Journalism Studies Conference - 2020’ was inaugurated by DU Vice-Chancellor (VC) Professor Akhtaruzzaman at the Muzaffar Ahmed Chowdhury Auditorium on campus.
Addressing as the chief guest, Prof Akhtaruzzaman welcomed the initiative for hosting such a great event.
He said: "For the first time, we are hosting an international conference on media, communication and journalism. I would like to pay our deepest tribute to Bangabandhu and martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the independence of the nation as the program was arranged to mark Bangabandhu’s 100th birth anniversary."
"Mass media, movies and motion pictures, play a crucial role in our society. This conference will provide a wonderful platform to share experience and knowledge among researchers, both at home and abroad," he added.
Ambassador M Shahidul Islam, secretary general of Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation, said: "I hope this conference will create an outstanding platform to share experience and knowledge among BIMSTEC country academicians and students."
He expressed hope that organizers would emphasize the exchange of views among participants of BIMSTEC countries in the following years as well.
The Television, Film and Photography Department of DU, and the Communication and Mass Media Department of American International University-Bangladesh (AIUB), jointly organized the event.
BP Sanjay, former VC of Central University of Tamil Nadu, delivered the keynote speech.
Among others, convener of the conference AJM Shafiul Alam Bhuiyan, Dean of Social Science Faculty Dr Sadeka Halim, Chairperson of Television, Film and Photography Department, Habiba Rahman, also spoke at the event.
Prof Dr Yuezhi Zhao, a Canadian research fellow and scientist, is expected to present the keynote speech in the concluding session of the conference.
The final ceremony of the conference will be held at AIUB on January 21, 2020.
