A nurse of Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) named Dilara has been accused of torturing a 10-year-old domestic help in Dhaka's Jatrabari area.

The victim, identified as Mala, was rescued and admitted in critical condition to the Burn and Plastic Surgery Unit of DMCH in the early hours of Saturday.

Quoting the victim's aunt, Jatrabari police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Majharul Islam confirmed the matter.

He said:"The minor had two burn injuries in her legs when she was brought to DMCH. We have arrested Dilara's husband Javed, but Dilara is on the run.

"A case has been filed in this connection against Dilara under the Prevention of Women and Children Repression Act, 2000 with Jatrabari police station."

The victim's aunt Soma Akhter told Dhaka Tribune: "Mala has been working as a domestic help in that house for the past two years. She was often beaten by Dilara for minor household issues."

This time, Mala received burn injuries from a heated spoon as she was accused of stealing a chicken, Soma added.

"The employers didn’t even give Mala any primary treatment and locked her in the house. I rescued her, admitted to DMCH, and informed the police about this brutality," she concluded.
