Newaz was arrested on Wednesday evening in Lalbagh area

Police have arrested a BNP leader in Dhaka's Lalbagh area during the election campaign for the party-nominated Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) mayoral candidate Ishraque Hossain.

The arrestee is Mir Newaz Ali Newaz, youth affairs assistant secretary of the party's executive committee.

The party alleged that Newaz was arrested on Wednesday evening when he was campaigning for Israque in front of the Lalbagh Fort gate.

Lalbagh police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Ashraf Hossain told Dhaka Tribune that Newaz was arrested as per court order.

Newaz has warrants issued for his arrest in four cases filed in 2013, the OC said.

"We will produce him before a court on Thursday," he added.

On January 2, police arrested Tajuddin Ahmed Taju, BNP-backed Ward 32 councillor candidate of the DSCC election, in the capital.

Taju, also the president of BNP Bangshal unit, was arrested in connection with sabotage and political cases filed against him earlier, police said.

The elections to DSCC and Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) are scheduled for January 30.
