A suspected drug trader has been killed and two others injured, in a “gunfight” with Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) in front of the Shohagh Paribahan bus shed in the Malibagh Railgate area of Dhaka.

The deceased has been identified as Iqbal Hossain, 40.

The incident occurred around 7am on Sunday.

Mohammad Mohiuddin Faruqui, company commander of RAB 2 confirmed: “Iqbal Hossain, his wife Rafika Hossain, and brother-in law Mashnur, were caught in a gunfight and were later rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where on-duty doctors declared Iqbal dead.”

The two injured are currently receiving treatment and are in RAB custody. The doctors said they were shot in the leg.

At a media brief, Faruqui added: “Iqbal Ahmed was a notorious yaba trader carrying 1 lakh yaba pills from Cox’s Bazar to Dhaka on a Shohagh Paribahan bus. RAB received information regarding this drug shipment. Our RAB team took up position near the bus and waited for all passengers to disembark after it reached the spot in the morning.”

All the passengers left except Iqbal Hossain, who had at least 10 to 12 items of luggage. After about 20 minutes, two private cars approached the spot to pick him up. A man and a woman got out of the cars and started to pick up Iqbal’s luggage. By then, RAB  had already cordoned off the area to conduct a search.

“Sensing trouble, Iqbal Hossain fired shots at the RAB, initiating the gunfight in which he suffered bullet injuries,” Faruqui said.

The deceased and the injured are from Akkelpur upazila of Joypurhat district and were residing at 860/C, road 13, Adabar, in Dhaka.
