The fire started around 4:30pm on Wednesday and was doused around 5:45pm
A worker was killed and at least 34 others injured yesterday after a fire ravaged through a plastic factory in Keraniganj of Dhaka.
The fire started at the factory in Chalkutia around 4:30pm and 10 firefighting units were sent to put out the flames, said Fire Service and Civil Defence headquarters duty officer Ershad Hossain.
"A man was killed and 34 people injured in the incident. However, the identity of the deceased is yet to be confirmed," he added.
Firefighters doused the fire around 6:10pm, he said.
Victims said the fire broke out at the factory, which produces onetime plastic glasses and cups, after a gas cylinder exploded with a loud bang.
While the firefighters recovered the charred body of the deceased, the injured factory workers were rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH).
Jakir Hossain, a burn victim, said he works at the packaging section of the factory. About 150 workers work in two shifts. While they were working an engineer raised alarm shouting fire.
DMCH burn unit Resident Medical Officer (RMO) Dr Partha Shankar Pal said: "All of the injured have sustained burn injuries and are undergoing primary treatment."
Visiting the burn unit, Health Services Division Secretary Md Asadul Islam told reporters that most of the victims had sustained more than 50% burns. “A board will be formed on Thursday [today] to ensure their proper treatment,” he added.
The factory had also caught fire earlier in February.
While visiting burn unit, State Minister for the Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Nasrul Hamid told the reporters the plastic factory was not approved for operation.
