Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Mayor Sayeed Khokon said to bring discipline in transportation; franchising companies will provide bus services along 20 to 22 routes of Dhaka city which will be finalized by March 2020.
He made the statement after a meeting at Nagar Bhaban in Dhaka on Monday.
Sayeed Khokon said: “The meeting agreed to launch a new circular bus service in the Old Dhaka area by the end of this month (December). The services will cover points like Sadarghat, Dholaikhal, Staff Quarters and Rampura.”
“The service will ensure faster commuter service through BRTC buses at reasonable fares for citizens,” he added.
He also said the committee will sit in a meeting with the transport sector leaders within this month in this regard.
On April 3, the DSCC mayor had said some 4,500 new buses—half of which will be air conditioned—will be introduced in the capital, whereas, all old buses will be removed. Although the target was set to launch the modern bus service under franchised companies by 2020, the Mayor said: “Piloting of the modern bus service will start by next year.”
He also said: “The progress slowed down as committee members became busy with the national polls and tackling the dengue crisis.”
The committee was formed on September 9, 2018 following directives of the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) to introduce Bus Net in Dhaka by franchising bus routes.
The meeting was attended by the Additional Police Commissioner (Trafic) Mofiz Uddin Ahmed, BRTA Chairman Dr Kamrul Ahsan, BRTC Chairman Ehsan Elahi, transport expert Dr S M Saleh Uddin.
