Autopsy report confirms the victims were strangled to death

Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has arrested two youths for their alleged involvement in the murders of two women at a house in Dhaka's Mirpur area.

The DB police arrested the duo on Wednesday afternoon.

The arrestees are Ramzan Ali, 22, and Yousuf, 23, both residents of Bhola.

Shahadat Hossain, DB's senior assistant commissioner (Pallabi zone), said they were apprehended in Sadarghat area of Dhaka while they were trying to flee the capital to their natal homes.

On Tuesday, police recovered the bodies of Shaheda Begum alias Rahima, 65, and her domestic help Sumi Akter, 15, from a flat housed on the third floor of a four-storey building in Mirpur 2.

Sumi started working at Shaheda's house on Monday, police said, quoting the girl's aunt.

The DB official said during primary investigation, both the arrestees admitted that they were involved in the killings over financial transaction with Shaheda.

Quoting the duo, he said Shaheda had been running an immoral business in the flat for long time.

Ramzan and Yousuf worked as assistants to Shaheda and used to get commission, he said.

Shahadat said a dispute erupted recently over financial transaction among them, leading the cause of the murders.

However, it is not yet clear whether the maid, Sumi, was involved in the immoral business or she was victimized, the DB official said.

"We will produce the duo before a Dhaka court on Thursday and seek remand to interrogate them," Sahadat added.

Shaheda's daughter Rashida Begum filed a murder case against unknown accused with Mirpur police station on Tuesday night. Later, the case was handed over to the DB police for investigation on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, the autopsy report said the woman and her domestic help were strangled to death.

Dr KM Mainuddin of Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College confirmed the matter on Wednesday.

Another test will be conducted to confirm whether the domestic help was raped.
