The flames have gutted part of the bridge, a nearby electric pole and wires
A fire broke out on the foot overbridge near Panthapath intersection in Dhaka late on Tuesday night.
The flames erupted on one side of the overbridge around 11:35pm, according to several Dhaka Tribune employees present at the scene.
However, it was yet to be known how the fire started, gutting part of the bridge, a nearby electric pole and wires.
One firefighting unit arrived at the scene soon after and brought the fire under control around 11:50pm.
Baizid Haque Joarder, deputy magazine editor at Dhaka Tribune, said: “I don't know for sure, but I think the flames may have spread from a smaller fire lit by homeless people living under the overbridge.
“Initially, the posters on the bridge’s pillar caught on fire and then spread to an electricity pole beside it. Later, half of the bridge was engulfed in fire.”
Fire Service and Civil Defence is yet to determine the cause of fire.
