The in-laws demanded Tk10 lakh from the deceased 6 months ago

Police recovered a woman's body from a hospital after she was taken from her in-law’s house in the capital's Dhanmondi on Sunday night.

Her father, Abdul Matin claimed that the victim Diramoni Akter Mitanoor, 19, was beaten to death during an altercation over dowry and was subsequently hung from a window at her in-laws’ house. However, her in-laws claimed it was suicide.

Police arrested the victim’s father-in-law ABMA Kafi and his wife Surayia Begum suspecting their involvement in the death.

Dhanmondi police station Officer in-Charge (OC) Md Abdul Latif confirmed to Dhaka Tribune that their primary investigation revealed the woman committed suicide after she was tortured over dowry demands from her in-laws.

Diramoni married Adnan Abdullah Haque Tamin, one and a half years ago and the couple has a baby boy.

Matin said the in-laws demanded Tk10 lakh six months ago and started torturing her to extract that amount from him. “Adnan is still a student and he cannot protest his family's act since he is jobless.”

On Sunday evening, Adnan called Matin and asked him to visit them saying that Mitanoor fell sick. “We rushed to Dhanmondi from our Narayanganj home and found my daughter hanging inside bathroom. The door was open.”

“We took her to a private hospital despite her in-law’s attempts to bar us from doing so. Finally, we were able to take her to a hospital after a half-an-hour long brawl. Doctors declared her dead upon arrival at the hospital,” he said.

The police's inquest report found marks of minor injuries on several parts of her body.

Her family members said that her in-laws used to insult her as her family was not financially solvent.
