Police have arrested an additional secretary of the Ministry of Public Administration (Mopa) on allegations of abusing his wife for dowry.
The accused Zakir Hossain was arrested from the Superior Officers' Quarters at Baily Road in the capital. The incident occurred on Saturday night, said Md Sajjadur Rahman, deputy commissioner of Ramna Division Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP).
Meanwhile, Zakir has been assigned by the ministry as an officer on special duty (OSD).
According to police, Zakir’s wife Dr Fatema Jahan, 39, called the emergency service hotline 999 and accused her husband of torturing her.
Police went to the house immediately after receiving the call, arrested Zakir, and sent Fatema to the One-Stop Crisis Centre (OCC) at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) for medical examination.
Later, Fatema filed a lawsuit against her husband under the Prevention of Women and Children Repression Act 2000.
According to the case details, Zakir was in the habit of frequently demanding dowry from Fatema and torturing her.
