The Dhaka University (DU) authorities have sacked five faculty members who were on study leave overseas for not joining work after completion of their studies..
The decision was made at a meeting of the university syndicate on Wednesday, chaired by Dhaka University Vice-Chancellor Professor Akhtaruzzaman.
Islamic History and Culture Department Associate Professor and Syndicate Member Mohammad Humayun Kabir confirmed the matter to Dhaka Tribune.
The sacked teachers are - Associate Professors: Muhammad Mujibul Kabir of Finance department, Dr Mosammet Asma Jahan of Accounting and Information Systems department, Dr Md Sohel Samsuzzaman of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology department; Assistant Professor Sanwar Uddin Ahmad of Mathematics department and Lecturer Ayesha Zaman of Electrical and Electronic Engineering department.
Further, two staff members of the university were also relieved of their duties. They are Ajit Chandra Bhowmik of engineering department - sacked for his alleged involvement in a rape of the daughter of a staff member, and Md Kamruzzaman for irregularities of attendance at the office.
The VC said the five faculty members were sacked for living abroad for a long period of time without permission from the university, after their duration of study leave expired.
