Essential food price hike: Importers under surveillance

Food Minister Sadhan Chandra said rice price has not been increased in recent times

National Board of Revenue Chairman Mosharraf Hossain Bhuiyan has said owing to the recent hike in prices of essential foods, importers are being surveilled.

He made the statement at a roundtable discussion on "Prevailing situation of production, import, stock, value chain, and pricing of annual demand for essential commodities, " organized by Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industries (FBCCI) at the Federation Bhaban in Motijheel on Sunday.

FBCCI President Sheikh Fazle Fahim, who moderated the roundtable, made the disclosure to the media after the meeting.

FBCCI organized a roundtable titled 'Prevailing situation of production, import, stock, value chain, and pricing of annual demand for essential commodities' on November 24, 2019 | Dhaka TribuneHe said the NBR chairman had also said strict action will be taken against the importers who are found involved in hiking prices of the essentials.

Commerce Minister Tipu Munshi, Food Minister Sadhan Chandra Majumder, Industries Secretary Abdul Halim,  business leaders, and importers and wholesale dealers of daily essentials, were also present at the meeting.

Food Minister Sadhan Chandra said rice price has not been increased in recent times.

Commerce Minister Tipu Munshi reiterated his statement that prices of those essentials, which have gone up, will come down to normal within 10 days.
