A suspected drug dealer has been killed in a reported gunfight with Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) at Hazaribag area of Dhaka.

The incident occurred near Sikder Medical College in the area around 4am on Wednesday.

The deceased -- Nadim Bahadur, 38 -- is a suspect in nine cases including drug dealing, RAB officials said.

RAB also recovered a pistol, four rounds of bullets, and some liquor from the scene, Major SK Nazmul Arefin of RAB 2 told Dhaka Tribune.

He said: “Acting on a tip-off that a gang of suspected drug dealers are approaching on a motorbike, we set up a check post near Sikder Medical College.”

“As the bike, with 2 riders on board, approached the spot, we signalled them to stop. However, they disregarded our instructions and opened fire, causing us to fire back in retaliation, triggering a gunfight.”

Nadim sustained bullet injuries during the fire exchange, while his associate fled the scene.

Later, he was taken to the emergency unit of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) in critical condition, where the on-duty doctor pronounced him dead and sent his body to the hospital’s morgue for autopsy.

A case is yet to be filed in connection with the matter.
