Sufia Kamal’s 20th death anniversary observed

The 20th death anniversary of eminent poet Sufia Kamal, founding president of Bangladesh Mahila Parishad and a pioneer of Bengali women’s emancipation, observed yesterday.

On the occasion, the Mahila Parishad organized a memorial meeting at Sufia Kamal auditorium in Dhaka, reports BSS.

Taking part in the memorial meeting, Sultana Kamal said Sufia Kamal had direct contribution to rebuilding today’s Bangladesh.

She had active role in each movements of 1952-1971, she added.

Sultana Kamal said Sufia Kamal had struggled throughout her life for the emancipation of women from prejudice. "She fought for establishing an equal society for men and women," she said.

With acting president of the parishad Dr. Fapjia Moslem in the chair, Joint General Secretary Rakhi Das Purkayostho and Executive Officer of the organization Runu Das also spoke.

Begum Sufia Kamal died in Dhaka on November 20 in 1999 and was the first woman to be given a state funeral in Bangladesh.

Her remarkable works are ‘Sanjher Maya, ‘Maya Kajal’, ‘Mon O Jibon’, ‘Shanti O Pranthana,’ ‘Udatto Brithibi’ and ‘Diwan’.
