While police pleaded the court to keep him behind bars until the end of investigation, Razib's counsel pleaded for his bail
A Dhaka court on Monday sent Tarequzzaman Razib, councillor of Dhaka North City Corporation’s (DNCC) Ward No 33, to jail in an arms case.
Metropolitan Magistrate Abu Sayeed passed the order on Monday, after case investigation officer and Detective Branch of police’s Inspector Fazlul Haque produced him before it after end of seven-day remand in the case.
While police pleaded the court to keep him behind bars until the end of investigation, Razib's counsel pleaded for his bail.
After hearing both sides, the court sent the DNCC councillor to jail.
On October 19, Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) had detained Razib, also an Awami Jubo League leader, during the raid in Dhaka on charge of extortion and land grabbing. RAB also recovered bullets, bottles of foreign liquor, and cash.
Two cases - under the Narcotics Control Act and the Arms Act – were lodged at Bhatara police station the next day.
Hours after his detention, Razib was also expelled from the post of Jubo League's Dhaka north unit joint general secretary for breaching organizational discipline.
On October 21, a Dhaka court had remanded the DNCC councillor for 14 days in total, seven days each in the two cases.
