Another injured is undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College and Hospital

An elderly woman has died and a minor girl injured in a fire that broke out at a multi-storied residential building in Dhaka's Dhanmondi area.

The fire broke out on Saturday morning.

The deceased is Jamila Kuti, 65, a resident of Kachua village under Saghata upazila in Gaibandha. 

Members of Fire Service and Civil Defence sent both of them to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) after a rescue operation.

Jamila was declared dead by the duty doctor around 10:45am, DMCH police outpost in-charge Inspector Md Bachchu Mia told Dhaka Tribune.

Injured Shaheda, 12, who worked as a domestic help in a flat located on the fifth floor of the same building, is undergoing treatment at the hospital, he added. 

The fire erupted on the fourth floor of the 12-storey building, situated in Dhanmondi 6/A, around 9:25am, Fire Service and Civil Defence control room duty officer Russel Shikdar said. 

Three firefighting units extinguished the fire around 11am, Russel added. 

AKM Rayhanul Ashraf Hossain, senior station officer at Mohammadpur fire station, said a short circuit caused the fire.
