Four people were killed after people clashed with police over fabricated hate comment on social media in Bhola

A group of students and teachers of different Qawmi madrasas in Dhaka’s Mohammadpur blocked a road in the area, protesting the Bhola clash that left four people dead.

They blocked the road, adjacent to Allah Karim Mosque and Mohammadpur Town Hall, around 11am on Monday.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Assistant Commissioner (Mohammadpur zone) Shibli Noman told Dhaka Tribune: “They held peaceful rallies in the area, and then removed the blockade around 12:30pm.”

“Traffic situation is normal now.”

Eye witnesses said, the demonstrators demanded the ban of activities of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (Iskcon).

The near one-and-half hour-long blockade caused severe traffic congestion on several roads in Mohammadpur.

What happened in Bhola

The protestors were chanting slogans demanding justice after four people were killed and over 200 injured in Sunday's clash in Bhola's Borhanuddin upazila as police opened fire to disperse a mob, who gathered to demand punishment for a Hindu man who they believed was responsible for hate conversations against Islam on Facebook Messenger app.

Police and locals said messages containing derogatory remarks about Allah and Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) were sent to several individuals from the Facebook ID of Biplob Chandra Shuvo. Screenshots of the messages went viral on Facebook, triggering condemnation and protests.

Biplob went to Borhanuddin police station on October 19 to file a general diary claiming that his account had been hacked. Police also detained two suspected hackers.

A case was filed against 5,000 unknown people over the clash with Borhanuddin police station.

On Monday, protestors in Bhola sought the removal of the district’s police chief and officer-in-charge (OC) of Borhanuddin police station within 72 hours

All Party Muslim Unity Council convener Maulana Mohibullah and Member Secretary Tajuddin Faruk announced a six-point demand at a press conference at Bhola Press Club Monday morning.
