Decision taken at Ganabhaban
Prime Minister and Awami League President Sheikh Hasina on Sunday relieved Omar Faruk Chowdhury of his duties as chairman of the ruling party's youth front, Jubo League.
The decision was taken at a meeting of the Awami League chief and central leaders of Jubo League at Ganabhaban.
Omar Faruk Chowdhury was not invited to the meeting.
The decision comes at a time when the ruling party's youth front is going through a severe image crisis for the involvement of its top leaders with casinos and corrupt improprieties.
In the 47 year history of Jubo League, 71 year old Omar Faruk was the oldest chairman. He secured the post at the age of 64 in 2012.
But his name surfaced in various media because of allegations of corruption and the former Jubo League chairman has been out of the public eye for about two weeks.
Many members of the Jubo League committee have been disappointed with their chairman for long because of his corrupt practices in the formation of various committees of the youth front.
Just after the meeting yesterday, Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader told reporters that Omar Faruk was relieved of his duties.
After the government launched the crackdown last month, Faruk criticised it saying he believed it was a conspiracy against his organisation.
On October 3, Bangladesh Bank's Financial Intelligence Unit asked all banks and financial institutions to send information on the bank accounts of Omar Faruk within three working days.
Before that, Bangladesh Bank froze the accounts of Omar Faruk and some other top Jubo League leaders following a crackdown on casinos.
Committee formed to hold national congress
Meanwhile, a committee was formed to organise the youth front's upcoming national congress scheduled to be held on November 23.
Presidium member Chayan Islam was named convener of the committee while Jubo League Secretary General Harunur Rashid was made member secretary.
This convening committee will also coordinate the regular activities of the youth front till its congress, said Quader.
During the meeting, Awami League chief Sheikh Hasina also gave guidelines to Jubo League leaders on preparations for the upcoming national congress.
Jubo League sets age limit at 55 years
In the meeting, an age limit of 55 was also set for members of the organisation.
Although the National Youth Policy defines any citizen between 18 and 35 as a youth, as of now, no one in the Jubo League central committee falls in this age group.
The prime minister also asked party leaders to rebuild the image of the youth front as there is much controversy concerning the involvement of central Jubo League leaders in many improprieties.
A number of Jubo League leaders, including expelled Dhaka South Jubo League President Ismail Chowdhury Samrat, expelled organizing secretary of the same unit, Khalid Mahmud, self-proclaimed member and businessman GK Shamim, and Jubo League Dhaka North unit Joint Secretary General Tarequzzaman Rajib, have already been arrested for reported links to illegal casinos since a crackdown began on September 18.
