Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (Buet) has announced to ban student politics on the campus.
Buet Vice Chancellor (VC) Prof Saiful Islam came up with the announcement on Friday evening, bowing down to one of the demands put forth by the protesting students.
The announcement also came four days after the brutal murder of Abrar Fahad who became the victim of student politics.
While holding a discussion with the protesting students regarding Abrar’s murder, he said: "I am banning student politics at Buet as per my power."
The discussion started at the Buet auditorium around 5:30pm.
Directorate of Students' Welfare (DSW) Director Prof Mizanur Rahman was also present during the discussion.
He declared that from now onwards, no Buet teachers, including himself, would join any political program irrespective of whatever the party is.
Earlier on Wednesday, Buet Teachers’ Association decided to ban teacher politics at the university.
All of the developments came to the fore after Abrar, a second year student of Electrical and Electronic Engineering Department of Buet, was beaten to death early Monday.
Some Chhatra League leaders have been accused of beating him for his alleged involvement with Islami Chhatra Shibir, the student wing of Jamaat-e-Islami.
Meanwhile, Abrar's father Barkat Ullah filed a murder case against 19 people with Chawkbazar police station on Monday evening.
Later, Bangladesh Chhatra League expelled 11 of its members permanently from the organization for their involvement in the murder.
As of Friday, 18 people have been arrested in connection with the murder.
