Prime minister Sheikh Hasina has said the murder of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (Buet) student Abrar Fahad was not part of student politics.

The premier also said the real reason behind the murder needs to be unearthed.

Sheikh Hasina made the statement while addressing a press conference on her recent US and India tour at Ganabhaban in Dhaka on Wednesday.

“I heard of the news in the morning and immediately ordered the police to arrest the killers,” she said.

Mentioning that criminals are criminals, Sheikh Hasina, also the president of the ruling Awami League, said no one will be spared regardless of their political affiliations, including Chhatra League.

“Killers will get the highest punishment,” she assured.

She also said: "I ordered Chhatra League leaders to expel those involved with the murder."

Abrar, a second year student of electrical and electronic engineering department of the university, was beaten to death on Monday.

Some Chhatra League leaders have been accused of beating him over claims of Abrar being involved with Chhatra Shibir.

Meanwhile, Abrar's father Barkat Ullah filed a murder case against 19 people with Chawkbazar police station on Monday evening.

Later, Bangladesh Chhatra League expelled 11 of its members permanently from the organization for their involvement in Abrar’s murder.

Abrar’s death sparked protests all across Bangladesh. The protesters have demanded justice for Abrar and capital punishment for the murderers.

As of now, 13 people have been arrested in the murder case.
