DSCC Mayor Khokon said they are conducting drives to keep prices under control
Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Mayor Sayeed Khokon has conceded that price of onion is out of people’s buying capability while prices of remaining essentials are affordable.
He made the statement while conducting a special drive at Buet market, near Palashi intersection on Wednesday.
Khokon said: "We have recently noticed that the price of onions has been inflating rapidly, making its affordability beyond people's reach. Apart from that, the prices of other daily essentials do remain reasonable and stable."
The mayor said several reports were also published in newspapers over the high surge of onion price.
“After taking cognizance of the issue, we started special drives from today (Wednesday) across the Dhaka South City Corporation area to keep the price of onions under control, so that people can purchase onions at a fair price,” he said.
Mayor Khokon warned that each and every shopkeeper must sell onions at the rate fixed by the government; otherwise action will be taken against them in accordance to the law.Urging shopkeepers to sell onion at a fair price,
Sayeed also mentioned that the supply of onions in the market is enough, therefore asking the general public to not buy a surplus amount of onions as it can create a vacuum in the market.
The mayor said the government has fixed the price of both local and Indian onions at a price range of Tk96 to Tk108 per kg.
